Peruvian asparagus Spared by El Niño floods
The asparagus crop has not been affected by the flooding that is hitting the country since last March, sources confirmed.
According to the latest report from the USDA, over 7,000 km of roads and 5,700 km of irrigation canals along the Peruvian central and northern coast are damaged, delaying or hindering the movement of foodstuffs to and from the market.
Banana, citrus, grapes, garlic and olives, are the crops mostly affected, but total losses cannot be calculated because besides structural damage there are potential problems linked to plant stress and disease.
Asparagus has not been affected by the flood as the aforementioned commodities, a source told Foodnews, adding that it is not clear if the flood could have any effect on the processing cycle for the coming months.
